Friendship PCS works diligently to narrow and close the achievement gap. EmbarK¹² is a vetted virtual option for families who otherwise would not have access to developmentally appropriate instruction, quality picture books and learning materials to gain the basic concept knowledge that defines school readiness and helps children succeed in kindergarten.

The EmbarK¹² curricular program is innovatively designed to help schools and districts give children ages 3–5 the academic foundation they need for a successful entry to kindergarten. Introduced by K12 in the fall of 2013, EmbarK¹²combines engaging interactive online lessons with hands-on learning materials, offline activities, and high-quality children’s literature. It embodies DAP guidelines from the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is aligned to the DC early childhood indicators of progress. In partnership with K12, Friendship can provide an outstanding online learning experience for our youngest scholars. In keeping with our goal to provide all prekindergarten students Reggio-inspired learning experiences, the Early Childhood department will collaborate with the K12 Online campus to ensure that the PK children benefit from these rich, hands-on, child-centered, arts-based learning experiences, are provided on a consistent basis.

Building and nurturing relationships with oneself, others and our environment are priorities as part of the Friendship Neighborhood. Each week, we will make sure our youngest learners have the opportunity to guide their learning through questioning and documentation, while also learning how to interact with the environment and other learners. This approach ensures that both virtual and in-person learning are prioritized while honoring a family’s choice to select online learning.

Each week, a learner’s programming will reflect the following learning environments and dedicated times

Building solid, academic background knowledge is a primary focus for our learner in the Elementary Neighborhood. We want to make sure our maturing learner is having the opportunity to engage in more academic content while consistently demonstrating mastery of skills and concepts while taking advantage of on-demand reteaching, practice, and enrichment activities. Learners will still have a greater percentage of time together in either virtual or in-person environments while honoring a family’s choice to select online learning.

Exploration of one’s future and consumption of content excites the learner in our High School Neighborhood at the high school level. Our learners are accumulating credits and achieving scores as each begins planning post-secondary perseverance and career alignment. Moreover, we want to make sure our high school-aged learner is having the opportunity to explore academic content; to demonstrate use of agency and voice; and have a plan to achieve post-secondary and career goals. Increased in-person programming is prioritized while balancing virtual and online learning.
